irssi-plugin-xmpp software package provides XMPP plugin for irssi, you can install in your Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) by running the commands given below on the terminal,
$ sudo apt-get update $ sudo apt-get install irssi-plugin-xmpp
irssi-plugin-xmpp is installed in your system.
Make ensure the irssi-plugin-xmpp package were installed using the commands given below,
$ sudo dpkg-query -l | grep irssi-plugin-xmpp *
You will get with irssi-plugin-xmpp package name, version, architecture and description in a table
